guidebook tells you

Hidden gems, cultural nuances, scam warnings, local secrets and honest truths about travelling Morocco from someone who actually lives here.

Quick insider tips

1
Negotiate everything but politely
Haggling is expected in the medina but aggression kills the deal. Smile, walk away slowly, watch the price drop.
2
Avoid "helpers" in the medina
Anyone who spontaneously offers to guide you to a tannery or carpet shop expects a commission from the shop. Just say "no, shukran."
3
The best food is never on Jemaa el-Fna
The famous square is for the experience. For actual food, walk two streets back into the medina.
4
Riads have two price tiers
Booking.com price vs direct email price. Always email first, you'll almost always get a better deal or a free upgrade.
5
Friday is couscous day
Every traditional restaurant serves couscous on Friday. It's always the best version of it you'll ever have, don't miss it.
6
Petits taxis have a meter use it
Always ask the driver to use the meter (compteur). If they refuse, get out and find another taxi.
7
Dress code is about respect, not restriction
Cover shoulders and knees in medinas and smaller towns. People are friendly, they'll appreciate the effort.
8
Atay (tea) refusal is rude, but optional
Accepting tea at a shop doesn't obligate you to buy anything. It's hospitality. You can sip and leave.
